Security Cameras and MoreClosed-Circuit Television (CCTV) DVR cameras are the new standard of security and surveillance. The original CCTV cameras were analogue, but are gradually being phased out in favor of digital cameras.

CCTV DVR cameras are able to transmit a 5:1 compressed signal, although DVD quality can be obtained with a higher compression of the signal. However, the recordings can quickly fill up hard drive space. Motion detectors are used to signal a CCTV DVR camera when to begin recording and help alleviate hard drive storage problems.

However, there is no standard output for the CCTV DVR cameras to follow. Some files require installation of a codec or a separate media player. Other CCTV DVR cameras present the file in its own executable player.

Another problem posed by CCTV DVR cameras is image distortion. Proper calibration of the cameras is uncommon unless done at setup. Possible distortion effects are incorrect aspect ratios and color information.

One advantage CCTV DVR cameras have over analog cameras is the options they provide. A CCTV DVR camera can be programmed respond to events to trigger recording at a higher resolution, and saved point of sale information. The best option, however, is the ability to sort through the recording to watch the desired event.
