DVR Systems - Standalone
Digital Video Recorders also known as DVR's typically come with either 4, 8, 16 or 32 channels. The number of channels is the maximum number of cameras that the DVR can handle.
There are many features to be aware of when considering a DVR, some more important than others. One of the most important features of a DVR is the frames per second (or FPS) at which it can record. A camera that is recorded at 30 FPS is being recorded at live motion. The playback is like watching a movie. When cameras are recorded at slower speeds like 7 FPS the playback is jerking because there is movement between frames. If you need all the cameras in your system to record at 30 FPS at the same time then the minimum FPS of the DVR should be the number of cameras times 30. For instance a 4 camera system the DVR should be able to record at 120 FPS. However, if hard drive capacity is a concern then slowing down the FPS recording rate saves storage space.
Other important features are the DVR's ability to be accessed through the web or 3G phone device. These are fairly common features, but be sure to double check the DVR capability before purchasing. Most DVR's come with the ability to only record when motion is detected. There are a growing number of DVR's that can an email alert when motion is detected.
