Motion Sensors

Security Cameras and MoreMotion cameras are security cameras activated by motion sensors. This is done not only to conserve energy but also to make review of video footage easier.

Motion cameras contain three main types of motion sensors. Ultrasonic sensors alert motion cameras when a moving object reflects an ultrasonic pulse. Microwave sensors do the same thing and are similar to police radar guns, while passive infrared sensors pick up body heat to alert motion cameras to activate. Many motion cameras contain more than one of these sensors. This helps to eliminate "false positives" that only one motion sensor might provide.

Some motion cameras use an advanced algorithm as a motion sensor. This uses a reference photo, then scans the reference photo's area for differences in pixelation. Most cameras that use this algorithm must install several safeguards to prevent the algorithm from activating the motion camera due to such false alarms as differences in lighting or in seasons.

Motion cameras do not have to be deactivated in order to make use of motion sensors. Some motion cameras take low-resolution pictures, and upon being activated by motion sensors begin taking high-resolution pictures. Motion cameras may also alert viewers when motion sensors have detected some activity.
