Motion Sensors

Security Cameras and MoreMotion lights are floodlights equipped with motion sensors. Motion lights are usually stationed outside businesses in order to provide illumination and deter criminals from entering. Equally important is the ability of motion lights to turn off when not detecting activity, which conserves energy.

Motion lights may use a laser or infrared tripwire, however there are three more common kinds of sensors for the motion lights. Passive infrared sensors detects body heat in the infrared spectrum, Ultrasonic sensors use a moving object's reflection of ultrasonic pulses and microwave sensors use technology similar to police radar guns. Motion lights tend to use more than one of these sensors in order to reduce the number of false alarms. Some motion lights have their sensors programmed to ignore small animals and pets.

Motion lights may be used in conjunction with security cameras to give the cameras a better picture of who or what ever has triggered the motion lights. Some home security experts have combined the motion lights activating with the security cameras activating, making the two happen simultaneously. Motion lights may also be paired with burglar alarms.

Other uses for motion lights include streetlights and public restroom lights.
