A motion sensor is at the heart of any home or business security system. A motion sensor activates security cameras burglar alarms and lights, and deactivates them when no activity is detected.
Current motion sensors use one of three types of sensors. Ultrasonic sensors emit ultrasonic pulses that measure the reflection of a moving object. Microwave sensors function similarly to police radar guns, and passive infrared sensors search for body heat in the infrared spectrum. Many motion sensors are used in tandem with each other to reduce the occurrence of false alarms.
Other types of motion sensors use the idea of a tripwire. Infrared and laser beams that activate burglar alarms or floodlights when broken are still very popular with home security experts.
One of the most complex type of motion sensors is the algorithm. This uses a reference photo stored in the motion sensor's memory, then checks the reference against the current area, checking the difference in pixels between the current area and the reference photo. However, given the natural differences in lighting, weather and other objects, care must be taken to reduce the number of false alarms.
In addition to activating security devices, motion sensors are also used to deactivate them. This cuts down on the cost of keeping these devices constantly active.
