Stun Gun

Security Cameras and MoreA stun gun is the generic name for a taser. Both are electroshock weapons, which are used to attack and incapacite opponents without killing them. Stun guns are becoming popular among law enforcement and civilian self-defense.

Electroshock weapons, like stun guns, produce an electrical shock that is high-voltage, but low current. The shock causes the victim's muscles spasm, which paralyzes him or her. Stun guns can be powered on as little as eight AA batteries.

Stun guns have a high margin of safety, but it can lead to cardiac arrest in a small percentage of people. Critics have charged that stun guns should not be used because criminals might be unaware they possess the condition which would lead to cardiac arrest when hit with a stun gun.

When a stun gun hits an attacker, three seconds are needed to totally incapacitate him or her, dropping them to the ground. However, this may be an exaggeration on the part of stun gun retailers. Objective research suggests the time for a stun gun to work is closer to five seconds.

Police have begun to use stun guns as a non-lethal way to incapacitate escaping prisoners. They have reported success, although the fatality of a student at UCLA may provide the criminals with more arguments against police using stun guns.
