Tasers are an electroshock weapon. It is designed to be nonlethal, and as such is used by several police forces to reduce shooting deaths. It is also popular among those interested in self-defense.

A taser uses a high-voltage electric shock that makes the victim's muscles spasm, paralyzing him or her. The shock is also low-current, the risk of death is slight, although the risk is very dependent on the health of the victim.

The effect of a taser is immediate. A half-second burst will cause intense pain and mucle spasms, while a taser jolt of two seconds and above will disorient an attacker and drop them to the ground.

Powering the taser is not a problem. The low current means a taser produces can be powered by as little as eight AA batteries.

Tasers and electroshock weapons in general have garnered their share of controversy. Critics charge that the voltage produced by a taser shock can lead to cardiac arrest in some people. They also claim that since the condition aggravated by the taser in the event of cardiac arrest may be unnoticeable, tasers may be a catalyst for death associated with this condition.
