Wired Security Cameras vs. Wireless Security Cameras

There are many reasons to choose wired security cameras and many reasons to choose wireless security cameras. The things you should consider when it comes to purchasing wired or wireless security cameras include the size of your home or property, the placement of the cameras, and the cost. Wireless security cameras are becoming more affordable all the time, but wireless security cameras also tend to be a little more expensive than wired security cameras.

Another thing to consider is the distance of the signal for wireless security cameras. Some wireless security cameras offer about three hundred feet (unobstructed) for a signal, but other wireless security cameras can go up to one thousand feet. A wireless security camera with a long signal is very convenient because you can place them in many different, hard-to-reach spots, without worrying about wires or cords. This means you can have your wireless security cameras in areas that didn't have the proper outlets for regular wired security cameras.

But wireless security cameras are not the only option, or always the best option. Wired security cameras also have their benefits. For one thing, wired security cameras tend to be more cost effective. For another, you never have to worry about dropping the signal. You also do not have to worry about something obstructing or otherwise affecting the wired security cameras signal. Wired security cameras can be placed almost anywhere wireless security cameras can be placed, and there are ways to hide the cords and wires that are attached to the wired security cameras.

In summary here are the main issues to consider when deciding whether to use wireless or wired cameras:

  • Most wireless cameras still need to be powered. They are not battery powered.
  • Wireless cameras can transmit up to 300 feet in perfect conditions. Each obstruction reduce the transmission distance.
  • Wireless cameras using a non-digital 2.4Ghz frequency may interfere with other deives like wireless routers and may perform unpredictably.
  • The selection of wireless cameras with builtin transmitters is very limited.
  • There are  many more wired cameras available with many more features from which to choose
  • Wired cameras will almost always get better resolution than wireless cameras, although digital wireless cameras have come along way.
  • Wired cameras can use 'siamese' cable that carries both power and cable so power does not have to be supplied near the camera
  • Wired cameras use RG59 cable that can only go about 200 feet. If you need to go further use video baluns and Cat5.
