Wireless backup cameras are small cameras that attach to the edge of a car's rear license plate. They transmit a real-time video feed of what's behind the car to a small LCD screen, usually around 2.5 inches, that can be mounted on the dashboard. The camera has a small wire that is connected to the reverse light circuit in the car so that the camera will turn on any time the car is put into reverse. Most models use the cigarette lighter as a power source.

The wireless backup camera has a wide field of view in order to provide the largest view possible. Most cameras have a 100 degree field of view horizontally and nearly a much vertically. While these cameras are useful for gauging how far a bumper is from a tree or another car when parallel parking or backing up, the camera should not be used exclusively. Drivers should still look around for maximum safety.
