Wireless technology has made it possible to make extremely small video cameras that can be used by anyone. These wireless cams are generally very small, often only an inch or less in diameter; though some dedicated security models are the more standard sized bullet, dome, or c-mount configuration. Other smaller models are disguised as ordinary household items such as alarm clocks, children's toys, and more.

The larger wireless cams security models are generally used outdoors to augment a home security system. The smaller ones are often used to observe people indoors. This type of use has led to the nickname "nanny cam" because some parents use these wireless cams to monitor babysitters and nannies. Others use wireless cameras to observe employees who might be stealing or doing something unethical.

All wireless cams transmit images on standard video wavelengths to a receiver. These are usually fairly small and can either show the image on a monitor or be hooked up to a recording device. If the wireless cams are capable of recording sound, the receivers will also receive the audio signals. The wireless cams are susceptible to interference from other wireless signals, and other people with receivers may be able to pick up the wireless cam's video information.
