Wireless security cameras transmit directly to a receiver that can be kept almost anywhere in the house. Some models of wireless security cameras, especially outdoor versions, may require wires that connect to a power source, although more limited-use cameras may run on batteries.

Most wireless security cameras transmit within a 2-6 GHz frequency range. It is possible to jam signals from some wireless security cameras if there are other wireless devices transmitting on the same wavelength. Most cell phones and wireless computers will not interfere, but other cameras might.

The receiver receives and manages signals from multiple cameras. Many receivers can handle at least four wireless security cameras, but some can go as high as sixteen. Some receivers come with built-in screens, while others hook up to TVs, computers, or DVR storage devices. Signals from some wireless security cameras can also be intercepted by other receivers, but some models avoid this problem with point-to-point transmitting.
