Wireless sensors are the next generation of remote sensors being used by many industries. Previously, sensors where placed at the end of long wires because they transmitted their information by wire. With advances in wireless technology, many companies have been able to make sensors that can function wirelessly and still remain as small and flexible as previous sensors. These wireless sensors are especially useful in environments that might be toxic or hostile to humans.

Wireless sensors can be used to detect almost anything, including vibration, motion, chemicals, light, flow, and more. Wireless sensors have become particularly popular in home security systems because small wireless devices can be used to detect doors or windows being opened or movement within a room. These devices can easily transmit information to the central security system.

Most wireless sensors operate by radio transmitter, usually transmitting in allocated, FCC certified bandwidths. These signals are picked up by a receiver which can interpret the data immediately, or send it on to a computer. Because they operate in radio bandwidths, many wireless sensors can be jammed by other wireless devices transmitting on the same wavelength, or by ambient radio signals. Many sensors have countermeasures to deal with interference, but as wireless devices proliferate the problem could increase.
