It is common for video surveillance to be done in places where cabling is either too expensive or impossible. The most common use for wireless video links is in video surveillance, although model airplane enthusiasts sometimes use them to fly their model airplanes from a first person point of view. In video surveillance, the wireless video link is attached to the camera and can operate by battery or by an AC connection. They transmit to a receiver that can convert the signal back to analog video if it is attached to a TV monitor, or the receiver can send the information to a storage device, such as a DVR. Some wireless video links come with monitors or storage devices built-in.

One disadvantage of wireless video links can be interference. Other wireless signals can jam transmissions from the camera, although some manufacturers have overcome this. Additionally, some wireless video links can have their signals intercepted by other receivers. Some wireless video links overcome this problem by using secure point-to-point transmission or encrypted signals.
